Upon waking up, at about two o’ clock in the morning, Jesse was surprised to discover that he was in bed, back at the resort. His head felt like it had been cracked down the center and viciously throbbed with pain. The light coming from one of the dim-lit lamps burned his eyes, and his throat felt like it was caked with dust. Once he was able to fully able to adjust to his surroundings, he rolled over to see that Gabe was laying next to him, dressed only in his boxer shorts, awake, and watching him.
“Hey,” Gabe said.
“Hey,” Jesse repeated, although he sounded like a ninety-year-old man, who had just been resurrected from death.
“Feeling better?”
Jesse shook his head as to say “No”.
Gabe got out of bed, strolled to the kitchen area, and returned with a large bottle of water. He passed it to Jesse. “Drink this. It might help.”
Jesse accepted the bottle and drank heavily from it. It did help with rehydration, and getting the nasty bile taste out of his mouth. “Did I throw up?”
“Yeah, a few times.”
A deep coldness swept over Jesse’s body, and he realized that just like Gabe, he was dressed only in his underwear. “Great. Now that expensive-ass dinner I bought is now in the toilet.”
“And also on the ground in front of the club,” Gabe said with a grin.
“I didn’t want you to see that,” Jesse replied, after a few minutes of being silent.
“See what?”
“Me being drunk like that…throwing up all over the place. I don’t want you seeing me like that.”
“You just had a little too much to drink,” Gabe said. “It’s not like you were bein’ loud and belligerent or something.” He ran his hand across the top of Jesse’s head and it alleviated some of the pain, if only for a second. “Nothin’ to be embarrassed about.”
“You’re good to me,” Jesse said softly.
Gabe seemed surprised by that statement. “You thought I wouldn’t be? You’re my boyfriend. I’m supposed to be good to you.”
The coldness Jesse felt in his body was almost instantly replaced by pleasant warmth, when he heard Gabe’s words. “I would kiss you right now, if my mouth didn’t smell and taste like a sewer.”
Gabe leaned over and kissed Jesse’s forehead. “You should probably go back to sleep. You’ll probably feel much better in the morning.”
Jesse nodded. “But what about the others? Did they come back yet?”
“No. Troy knows some rich dude who has a house out here. They went there for an after-party or something.”
Speaking of him…”Did Troy…” Jesse started, but he did know if it was appropriate to ask the burning question in his mind.
Gabe waited for Jesse to finish.
“Did he try anything with you?”
Gabe seemed genuinely confused by the question. “No. Why you ask?”
“I don’t know. When I sat down, I saw him on the dance floor with you…I don’t know, I just thought…”
“We should go to sleep,” Gabe said. He did not sound angry, but there was something in his voice that indicated a bit of irritation.
